How to Determine the Right Swing Direction (In or Out) for a Villa Door

Swing direction is often the last thing discussed, yet it's one of the hardest decisions to change once production has started. The frame, hinge recesses, and strike are all machined according to this direction.

Six factors that determine direction

• Snow accumulation: in provinces like Erzurum, Van, and Kayseri, an outward-swinging door can become impossible to open once snow piles up against it
• Prevailing wind: the direction the wind pushes the door is the direction that presses the seal shut; an outward-opening door seals better under wind pressure
• Hallway width: in a narrow entrance hall, an inward-swinging leaf eats into usable space
• Steps and landing: if there are steps in front of the door, swinging outward can be dangerous
• Security: on an outward-swinging door, the hinges sit outside, which calls for fixed hinge pins
• Fire safety and evacuation: in shared-use buildings, the door is expected to open in the direction of escape

Left or right? Let's clear up the confusion

Two different naming conventions circulate in the industry, and this is one of the most common causes of a wrong build. We use — and write plainly in our quotes — the following rule: stand outside and look at the door; if the hinges are on the left, it's a left-hand door, and if they're on the right, it's a right-hand door. Three extra precautions for outward swing

When an outward-swinging door is chosen, we add three things as standard:

• Fixed pins on the hinge side — so the leaf can't be pried off the frame even if the hinge is removed
• A wind stop — to keep the door from swinging all the way open and hitting the wall
• A top profile with a drip edge — since the leaf sits outside, it takes on more rain load

An overhang changes the equation

Most of the drawbacks of an outward swing largely disappear once there's an overhang or eave above the door. Snow and leaf buildup drops, rain no longer hits the leaf directly, and the seal lasts longer after installation.

That's why during a site survey we never evaluate swing direction on its own — we look at the whole entry landing: what's overhead, which way the ground slopes, and how much flat space there is in front of the door. The answers to those three questions usually settle the direction on their own.

How is direction read on double leaves and pivot doors?

On double-leaf doors, direction is defined by the hinge side of the active leaf; the fixed leaf locks to the frame with bolts. On pivot doors, the standard left/right description doesn't quite apply, because the leaf rotates on an axis rather than a hinge. What needs to be specified there is how far the axis sits from the edge and which way the leaf swings open. We list both as separate line items in the quote, which heads off a misunderstanding later.
