A durable surface doesn't come from a single process; it's a sequential chain: degreasing and de-rusting → phosphate pretreatment → primer → electrostatic powder coating → oven curing. Skip any link and the paint adheres but never locks in; a few years later it starts blistering from underneath. Making the whole door from stainless steel is neither necessary nor economical. What's critical are the moving and exposed parts: hinge pins, the lock cylinder, handle fixings and every screw. On the coastline, choosing these in 304-grade stainless steel adds far more to the door's life than galvanizing does — because the first rust almost always spreads from these small parts.
In salty regions the most effective maintenance is the simplest: washing the door with fresh water. Salt doesn't eat metal by itself; it draws moisture and keeps a permanently wet film on the surface — that's where the real damage comes from. A rinse once a year removes that film. Galvanizing is a serious advantage, but not an exemption. Edges exposed by cutting and drilling fall outside the zinc's protection; that's why galvanizing only makes sense together with the phosphate-and-paint chain. We compared the two on a separate page.
