
Do Exterior Villa Doors Rust? Solutions That Stop Corrosion
Whether a steel door rusts depends not on the door itself but on the surface treatment and the local air. Where rust starts and how it's stopped.

If you hold your hand near the bottom of the door and feel a draft, the problem is almost never the leaf itself. The gap left between the leaf and the finished floor is necessary for the door to open and close — but if that gap isn't sealed off, it becomes the biggest air leak in the house.
Close the door, shine a flashlight from outside, and look from inside. If light gets through, the gap is over 3 mm. In a normal installation, the space between the bottom of the leaf and the floor should be 3–5 mm; anything above that is a direct leak. A gap of 10 mm or more, unless the floor was raised afterward, is usually an installation error.
This is the fastest fix. An aluminum profile screwed to the bottom of the leaf, fitted with a brush strip, seals the gap without letting the door drag. Getting it right requires two measurements: leaf width and the remaining distance to the floor. Too long, and the door struggles; too short, and it does nothing.
This is a strip that drops down on its own when the door closes and retracts when it opens. It's set into the bottom edge of the leaf and stays invisible from outside. It costs more than a brush strip, but where the floor is stone or carpeted, it's the only realistic solution, since it doesn't drag.

The two fixes above sit on the leaf side. There's also a floor-side solution: an aluminum or marble threshold placed under the door opening both directs water drainage and gives the sweep a level surface to seat against. Without a threshold, a brush strip can't sit flush against an uneven floor.
Once the bottom is fixed, air sometimes keeps coming in from the sides. On the doors we make, the seal runs around three sides of the frame and four sides of the leaf; a silicone-based rubber seal blocks air, dust, and pests together. If the seal on your current door has hardened, been crushed, or torn, replacing it is a job that takes a few hours.

Both feel the same — a chill near the door — but the causes and fixes are completely different. There's a simple way to tell them apart: on a windy day, run a thin tissue around the door gap. If the tissue moves, you have an air leak, and the fix is the seal and strip options covered in this article.
If the tissue doesn't move at all, but the inner face of the door feels ice-cold to the touch, the situation is different: that's a sign of a thermal bridge. A steel leaf without a broken thermal bridge carries outdoor cold straight through the metal to the inner surface. As that surface temperature drops, indoor humidity condenses on it — sometimes appearing as water droplets on the inner face of the leaf, or as frost in a hard winter.
In this second case, replacing the seal or fitting a strip won't fix anything, because there's no air actually leaking. The fix is a leaf with a broken thermal bridge — in other words, the door itself. If you're staying with your current door, adding an insulated panel to the inside face gives a partial improvement.
3–5 mm between the finished floor and the bottom of the leaf is enough. Any less and the door drags; any more and you get a direct air leak.
It makes a noticeable difference for gaps up to about 6 mm. For larger gaps it isn't enough on its own and needs to be paired with a threshold profile.
Replace it if it doesn't spring back when you press it, or if it's hardened or torn in places. On an exterior door, a seal typically lasts a few years, depending on use and sun exposure.
