
Do Exterior Villa Doors Rust? Solutions That Stop Corrosion
Whether a steel door rusts depends not on the door itself but on the surface treatment and the local air. Where rust starts and how it's stopped.

"We replaced the door but we can still hear the conversations on the stairs" — a sentence we hear a lot. The reason is usually this: the insulation is being lost not through the door's body but around its edges. Sound behaves like a fluid; it finds the weakest point and flows through.

The basic rule of acoustics: a heavy surface blocks more sound. That's why a thin, light door stops improving past a certain point, no matter what you put inside it. Here, a steel door's weight is a natural advantage.
A hollow leaf works like a drum and amplifies sound. The filling damps that vibration. What matters is not just the material's name but its density: 30 kg/m³ rock wool and 80 kg/m³ rock wool are not the same product. Polyurethane foam does the job at first but sags over time and leaves a void at the top — and that void becomes a sound bridge.
Our standard is 80 kg/m³ rock wool; it doesn't sag and doesn't burn.
If the gap between leaf and frame isn't closed, the two points above go to waste. A millimeter-wide gap wipes out most of the insulation the body provides.
That's why you should ask how many sides carry gaskets. We run silicone-based rubber gaskets around 3 sides of the frame and 4 sides of the leaf. This also blocks dust, odors and insects.
This is the spot most often overlooked. The gap between door and floor is the single largest opening in the door, and it can let through more sound than the entire perimeter combined. The fix is an automatic drop-down seal that lowers when the door closes: it seals the gap when shut, then lifts as the door opens so it never drags on the floor.

Good news: almost everything done for sound insulation helps heat insulation too. The filling, the gaskets and the bottom seal do the same job on both fronts. On flat entrance doors opening onto a stairwell, that makes a difference you can feel in winter.
To be honest, the door alone doesn't solve everything. Noise also travels through the doorbell, the letter slot, the peephole and the line where the frame meets the wall. If you're chasing insulation on a door with a letter slot, choose a brushed, double-flap type.
Ask, in order: what's the filling, and how many kg/m³? How many sides are sealed? Is there a drop-down seal at the bottom? Will the measurements be taken on site? If all four check out, the insulation checks out.

In sound insulation there's no such outcome as "completely silent"; the goal is to make the noise stop being a nuisance. Not hearing conversations in the stairwell and not feeling the elevator motor are different levels of difficulty. Low-frequency sounds (a slamming door, the elevator) are far harder to block than high-frequency ones (speech).
Before replacing the door, run this test: open the door and listen to the noise, then close it and listen again. If the difference is small, the sound may be arriving by another route — a ventilation duct, a plumbing shaft or the wall itself. In that case a new door won't deliver the result you're hoping for.
No — no door blocks sound completely. With the right filling, perimeter gaskets and a bottom seal, conversation noise from the stairwell drops noticeably; low-frequency vibrations continue to get through in part.
In most cases yes, and it's usually the cheapest fix. Replacing the gaskets and adding a bottom seal makes a tangible difference without changing the door. If the problem persists after that, the body itself is inadequate.
