Steel Door Locking Systems and Point Counts
The short answer: The number of locking points shows how many separate places the door grips the frame. The more points, the harder it is to force the leaf open (prying with a crowbar). But the point count alone is not enough; the grade of the cylinder matters at least as much.
What is a locking point?
Every bolt that extends from the leaf into its keeper in the frame when you turn the key is one "point". With a single-point lock, the leaf is held only at lock height; a multi-point system engages the top, middle and bottom zones at once. That stops the leaf from being flexed open at one corner.
How much does the point count matter?
It matters, but it should not be overstated. A multi-point lock paired with a weak cylinder is defeated the moment the cylinder is snapped. Security is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain:
- Cylinder: Must resist snapping, drilling and key copying
- Lock body: The mechanism that drives the points
- Frame keepers: The sockets the bolts enter — if made from thin sheet, the point count loses its meaning
- Hinge side: Without trap pins, the hinges can be removed and the leaf lifted out
What are trap pins and why do they matter?
They are fixed pins on the hinge side. When the door is closed, they slot into sockets in the frame. Even if the hinges are removed, the leaf cannot be separated from the frame. However strong the lock is, the door stays vulnerable if the hinge side is unprotected.

Do smart locks make sense?
They are practical for people who prefer not to carry keys and for entrances with multiple users. They open with a code, card or fingerprint. Keep two things in mind:
- Battery: Most models run on batteries; there must be a mechanical key or an external power contact for when the battery dies.
- Mechanical backup: There should be a physical key option in case the electronics fail.

What to ask before buying
The lock brand, cylinder grade, number of locking points and whether trap pins are fitted should each appear as a separate line in the quote. The phrase "security lock" carries no information on its own.
The lock alone is not enough
The lock is the most talked-about part of a door, yet on its own it is the least decisive. The world's best lock is useless on a door whose frame is not properly anchored to the wall — what gives way is not the lock but the frame-to-wall joint.
Security is a chain: body construction, reinforcement around the lock zone, the locking system and point count, the cylinder grade, the fixed pins on the hinge side, and how firmly the frame grips the wall. The door is only as strong as its weakest link.
The cylinder — the easiest target
The cylinder is the most easily replaced part of a door, which is exactly why it is targeted most often. Use a cylinder protected against snapping and drilling. The good news: replacing the cylinder is the most effective security upgrade you can make without replacing the door, and it is relatively inexpensive.
A trap pin is a security component that stops the lock mechanism from being released if the cylinder is broken — which counts for a lot, given that the cylinder is the prime target.
Don't forget the hinge side
If a door cannot be forced from the lock side, the next attempt is to strip it from the hinge side. Fixed pins prevent this: they are steel pins on the hinge side that engage the frame, so even if the hinges are cut away, the leaf stays in place. Pivot models have no hinges, so they have no fixed pins either; their security comes from the locking system and the body structure.
Smart entry systems
Card, code and fingerprint entry have become common. It pays to be clear here: smart entry is a convenience layer, not a substitute for the security layer. A door's security is determined by the body, multi-point locking, fixed pins and the cylinder grade.
That is why a door with smart entry must always have a mechanical lock underneath. If the electronic unit fails one day, the door must still open with a key, and the system should warn you before the battery runs out.
